Partner is starting to explore new opportunities and thought I’d do some research for them (they don’t have Blind). Thoughts on culture, leadership, wlb, and interesting work at the following companies? Square DoorDash Zendesk Uber Store No. 8 Taskrabbit Zoom Zillow Snap
Square out of those. Not even close.
Yes, I’ve heard great things about Square.
Zillow has a decent culture (though some complain that it has declined over pandemic), well known for WLB, and a very clear vision. We're also committed to remote which is great for those that live in low cost locations but have a Seattle salary. We also are pushing large updates so most teams are working on something interesting but it depends on what you think is interesting.
can you provide referral ?
Second, I love it here and would recommend.
Doordash: doordon't
Tell me more! I just applied to a role there.
I also come from Meta. DD is 99% top down, and most relevant decisions are made by managers, pms and operators. Engineers are mostly just "coders", with little to no influence or voice. Coming from Meta, you will feel like you're being treated like a child. Also culture is not super good, a lot of teams will just play ping pong with your requests and you will have a very hard time getting stuff done. Remember 'nothing is someone else's problem' from FB? That gets replaced with "everything is someone elses problem, unless you can prove it is their problem" And we have way too many people from that other company that like to be rude and disrespectful, and hide it behind LPs.
Zendesk historically had amazing culture and wlb. However they got bought out by a private equity firm ~6 months ago and they’ve been rapidly slashing benefits, implementing strict productivity metrics, etc. I wouldn’t recommend it anymore
And the work is not very exciting. It varies from team to team but innovation is at a low point and the culture is nothing special, and getting worse. Wouldn’t recommend joining if you want your career to stay exciting.
Interesting, what kind of productivity metrics?
Taskrabbit has great WLB, but lower/mid tier comp. I would say leadership is a mixed bag… the CEO is not well respected but a new CTO joined who seems promising. Lots of improvements to the app need to be made, and could be a great fit for someone wanting to make an impact.
Just checked your site/glass door and LinkedIn and seems like the company is not hiring engineers right now, am I wrong?
Oh wow I thought we still had some product management and staff engineer roles open. You’re right though it looks like we’re not hiring atm in product, design or engineering
Stay away from Zoom, it doesn't even deserve to be in that list
Really, why do you say that? Can you elaborate?
Terrible WLB and engineering culture/practices.
