Tech companies to avoid as a white guy?
Sorry for the repost. Just got two responses for my previous post. Had a few questions about Google rewards: 1. Generally, what’s the expected salary bump after January rewards for meets and exceeds expectations? I’m joining as L4. At Microsoft, it was barely 2-4%. 2. Did Google ever plan to increase salaries across-the-board like Amazon? There were CNN articles this year about new perf system called GRAD. 3. Can Google veterans explain GRAD like I’m 5? I know perf reviews are now once a year with more power to managers. Anything else like PIP? Microsoft TC - 160k + Amy’s nuts 🥜🥜
Very valid questions. I’m also interested as I’m joining G as L5 TPM in September.
GRAD increases the bonus/refresher multiplier for the “average” rating, so that will increase pay for a subset of Googlers who used to get the old “Consistently Meets Expectations” rating. Should also have some positive impact on annual salary increases. Broadly speaking annual salary increases are a function of how much you’re paid relative to a super secret benchmark amount for your role/level AND your performance, so it’s hard to predict with certainty unless you are fully aware that your initial base offer is a lot higher or lower than your peers at the company. Average is probably also around 3% but if the benchmark figure for your role goes way up or you’re underpaid relative to your peers, your raise will be bigger. GRAD summary: 5 performance ratings, 70% of company gets the middle one, 8% get the bottom two which will result in PIP or some similar performance remediation process. Annual performance reviews. Promo is being more localized to individual orgs so your direct chain of command plays a much larger role.
What does GRAD stand for?

Hey, while I respect freedom of speech and other stuff, I’d humbly request users to post relevant answers. I envision this post to be a good reference point for others in future. Trash answers like these will only make it hard for others to find correct answers.
You’re right. Will delete. Couldn’t resist to be honest
