His rationale was that if we quote a range he will try to choose the lower end of the range and try to come with numbers using lower range for TC. Were you guys ever experience that ? Secondly when a recruiter is asking for a range repeatedly, do you give a range for TC and give a range for base? Or just mention TC and then let him come up with numbers? Thirdly are Recruiters rewarded if they bring people with lower TC?
@Randyfreer: so my friend was suggesting to come up with a explanation saying you should ask the recruiter to come up with the number estimating your skills and experience and then you can negotiate from there ! Do you concur that it's a good strategy ?
No. Always come up with ur numbers. Look up door-in-the-face technique and anchoring in negotiation.
Its all the same. If you tell them a range, they will get you lowest possible number that matches the range. If you dont tell, they will give out a lowball number, for which you will be forced to reply back with your target.. 🤷🏻♂️
Just say u have a minimum lower bound but no upper bound 🙂
Do your research and come up with a target number . No point of giving a range. Why would anybody not pay you close to the minimum?
The only time when I would use a range is when you are consulting and have a rate for long term projects and short term projects.
Is the recruiter asking for TC expectations? If so think of range (also doing your research), the lower is what you would accept, the upper bound is what would be a reasonable but awesome offer. Just mention the upper bound and make sure it’s not a round number. I.E. you would accept 275k, 295k would be awesome, then say 297k. Giving round numbers makes it look like you guessed it, giving an odd number makes it look like you made some researches.
Range is useless. If u ask me to pay u $5-10 for ur service am gonna pay you $5. You usually quote your reserve price and it’s Upto the bidder on how much higher they can bid!
@ex-rdio , @D.raven and @ubahcool : If there are discrepancies between websites such as Glassdoor, paysa and LinkedIn salary. How should I come up with a minimum number ..?
Blind or what would make you sign?
Don’t say the first number(s)
Exactly. Information is key. Don’t give up anything. Once you have their first number then go on with your expectations. But for instance, after I knew the pay range for a position (thanks to California laws), I gave what I expected which I had set to be 41k over what they would say is the higher end. They eventually met me there.
In California they have to give you range by law

Range for TC, unless it’s equity you can’t sell. I generally give them a range and the lower end is what I want.
