I’m seeking a career in software engineering but I’m currently employed by the military and I’m in my last 6-8 months (official date out is March 2024). I’m looking for perspective on freelance software engineering career opportunities and what that could look like for someone without a ton of projects and experience under their belt. As well as opportunities to be employed by big tech companies as a 23 year old male. Familiar with HTML, CSS, JS, TS, Node, and learning C#. I will be starting to focus on LC within the next 2 months and just wondering what the chances of me landing one of those TC 100K+ jobs actually is. I have friends working at Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Google so there’s a good chance I can get a referral though I’m not sure how far that can help take you. If you have any interest in Cybersecurity go to Perscholas.org they have a great training program
I saw they had something for software engineering that’s a resource I never knew about that I’ll have to research more on. I’m looking to stay away from the IT field especially government related as much as possible. Really good resource though thanks!
If you want to do freelance, you’re going to need a portfolio to show people. If you don’t have projects you’ve done for other people, then you need to set something up on your own. Something like a small, well-designed and functional website that shows you understand and can work the full stack. You can probably Google up some other ideas.
Ok that’s cool I have had people reaching out to me in regards to collaborating on open source projects and personal projects. I have a friend here who use to internship in Silicon Valley and they help me out a ton so I’m sure I can find others to do projects with I just have to ask.

Does military pay that low?
It does but for me it’s inflated due to me being in a high cost of living so I don’t even pay taxes and that’s still what I make. If I paid taxes it would be much less unless I dedicate years of my life to a beyond broken system. I can go one rank higher but even that isn’t worth it when I’ll be expected to perform the responsibilities yet I won’t get paid for my efforts for 6 months and no back pay.
