I’ve been eyeing a move to a 4 day work week company, and Shopify is listed on some websites as doing it during the summer. Are there any plans for it to become a permanent change? TC: 150k
Not happening
Lol
It was only during the pandemic and the summer
It was a temporary experiment hated by the senior leadership and then abandoned. Now we're going for 996 because we have a mission beyond summers. You're welcome to join that.
They didn't do it last summer, but I know a lot of people here that don't work most days anyway.
996 wants you to fill the Vault weekly survey accurately
Haha I wish
So 4-day workweeks ONLY took place during the peak of COVID, summer of 2021. This is NOT TAKING PLACE ANYMORE… Frankly, stay the fuck away from Shopify, why? Here’s a direct fact to hit you with: you’re expected to improve by 40% over whatever your previous output was last year, while getting paid less for more expected work, while they freeze promotions and raises … you sure you wanna dip your toe into that toxic swamp?
Pretty good summary 🥜
“Improve by 40% over whatever your previous output was last year” is just false and a deformation of what they actually mean. They mean be 40% better at something. Not 40% more productive. Learn a new skill, learn something new, do things that increase your general knowledge of things by 40%. This has nothing to do with how productive you are, but rather how passionate you are about tech in general. If you are at least somewhat curious about things you do not understand, and that you naturally gravitate around learning about these things, you’re already going above and beyond what most people are doing. If you’re going to be here just to coast, not stay up to date on tech, then that’s going to be a problem.
Avoid working at Shopify
As others have said it was a thing for a few summers. The summer it was discontinued some staff asked if we’re ever going to do it again and the CEO took that opportunity to “jokingly” threaten us with 996 during a company wide town hall.
He wasn’t kidding… in order to have that ability, you need to have two things: 1) personality, 2) sense of humour, both of which he lacks
Anyone who believes in Stoic philosophy cannot process humor at any level. That part of their brain doesn’t work.

Thank you AAPL and NVDA
I heard they didn’t do it last summer so I don’t think it’s a permanent change
Bummer. Seems like most of the permanent 4 day companies are startups or barely past startup stage. I know Amazon offers some 4 day roles but it’s team dependent.
