Recently I got offer from Shopify as developer from Europe. I accepted it few days back and will join around July. TC : 110000Euros + 97500 stocks(3 years) Shopify CEO sent a mail to management (Full mail here: https://outline.com/Kk8huV ) Some points from mail: 1. Everyone has to show up at least 40% better every year to qualify for our current jobs 2. Shopify, like any other for-profit company, is not a family. The dangers of "family thinking" are that it becomes incredibly hard to let poor performers go. Shopify is a team, not a family. I am not sure 40% growth every year is possible. I have some other competitive offers from Amazon and Snowflake but chose Shopify mainly because of culture and better work life balance to spend more time with my family. I am feeling surprised and this mail was sent the day I rejected my offer from other companies. My concerns/questions are, Is this something I should be worried about? Will Shopify change completely in upcoming days in terms of culture? The email. There will be others who will answer your question, I suppose
Is their pay in the top 5-10%? Then it could be fair. Do they give aggressive stock, bonus, raises to match that growth? The math just doesn’t add up to me. 40% growth every year adds up exponentially over time. In less than a decade you can become super human if you keep that growth pace.
If WLB was your biggest priority then might be worth it to reconsider. If you think you can meet high expectations probably won’t be a problem. Amazon would have required a lot too
OP is that an L5 or L6 offer? And the 97.5k stocks that’s 97.5k over 3 years right? Or 292.5k over 3 years? Also I would wait to see what HR send out but I doubt anything of real substance will change. Probably just trying to remove politics from the office, maybe introduce some new performance metrics and targets but it’s not going to turn into Amazon over night.
L6 3 year vesting. Missed to mention that. 1st year end 1/3rd, then every quarter. Edit : it is L6 actually. Senior Software Engineer role.
Sounds like a fking stressful job
How did you find the interviews after the behavioural deep dive/life story? Edit: also how was the life story, what kind of questions did you get?
You better achieve that 40%. My ARKF shares bought at $61 are not looking great. (Just kidding)
LOL
You gotta become Amazon to beat Amazon I suppose?
Op Frankly I see nothing of concern. CEO is reminding tuff times ahead coz guess what world economy ain’t the best. Gently reminding PIP will b there if you don’t perform well year after year. Timing of email coincides with your date of offer accepted- yea that’s random. 2 options- take it or leave it. IMO ceo is progressive thinker and I would take up on his offer. Running a business isn’t a small thing.
Love it
