CNN+ and NBC News Now folx, what are producing salaries like for streaming shows compared to traditional broadcasts? All the networks are expanding their streaming services and hiring hundreds of new staff members. Lots of people are jumping ship to get promotions they've been long overlooked for. For example, a friend of mine left ABC News as AP and went to NBC as an OTT livestream producer. She secured a 97k salary + 7k bonus which is pretty high for a first-time producer (though I'll admit she did have a personal relationship with the anchor who advocated for her). After nearly 5 years in the business, I'm FINALLY making 80k in my first producing role, but I had to switch companies several times to snag that title. I work in public media so I know my salary is lower than other outlets, but I'm curious to learn how it compares to everyone who's jumped on the streaming train (especially since many streaming producers have less experience/are usually promoted faster than people on flagship shows). #journalism #news #producing #nbcuniversal #abc #disney #streaming #cnn #nbc #msnbc #fox
Out of curiosity, what’s the growth path for media producers? What does one aspire/go on to become over time in the industry?
To get to a level where you have ownership; creative control over what stories you want to tell and how to tell it. Becoming an executive producer is a common route. You will make hiring and financial decisions to support your vision.
As someone else said it depends, at least at NBC. Broadcast in NYC gets paid the highest. Local or digital is lower. Producers I know are at 90-95k. You have to be a manager (coordinating producer, senior producer) to get higher from what I hear. CNN’s streaming is hiring like mad, even NBC folks, so I’d imagine they’re paying them well to leave.
Why does it matter?

Salaries for producing roles is a huge range depending on a lot of factors such as local vs. national, sports vs news vs scripted vs unscripted, yoe, market size, etc. If we're talking about national news for example, I would expect about $80k for an associate producer up to $200k for a senior producer.
APs in news can go way lower at some of the big networks in NYC…like 50-60k. Unless there’s been a wake up call recently. (Source: family member sr digital news producer in industry 7-8 years who recently left for a higher paying industry)
The information I have is for recent new hires but yes, it was $45-$60K in the last decade.
