I’m an Application Developer and I’m looking to switch to a career in Data Science. How do I go about it? Where do I start? Suggestions are appreciated.
Do couple of coursera courses and try applying your newly gained knowledge to some datasets on Kaggle.
Industry is biased towards PhD, no PhD no data science, there are people in few companies whose only job is to keep the field very much in the circle, so even if you know stuff they will stifle your career
Does n a non-CS but quantitative PhD like Physics qualify?
Is pay same ? I imagine less ...
A lot more money is in data science, also if you are from application dev world, you would be put as machine learning engineer and mostly would work on big data or devops helping data scientists with phds to train models
PhD in machine learning
University if Illinois has an MS you can do online, see Coursera
Start with a udemy course and understand what you are getting into.
And then pick up an open dataset and try to apply the concepts you learnt on it.
