EB1, RSU, Mortgage vs Joining a startup early that you believe in.

I started my employment 2 years ago, after finishing my phd. My rsus will finish vesting in the next 2yr. And Amz also applied for an EB1 for me. I was TT last year (at least that's what the mgr said, and I expect to be rated well this year as well). I have other factors that make me want stability like I had my first kid recently, and I have a mortgage to pay, and my wife does not work. I don't think I can start my own company because I lack skills in finance / management skills etc, but I am technically strong so I think the most rewarding path (but also risky path ) for me will be to join a good company early . Of course that's risky , and even though generally I am risk averse ( holding half of assets in cash ๐Ÿ˜…) but my career is one area where I am willing to make bets. My current plan is to stay with Amz at least for the next 2 years, but I am worried that I will miss out on the growth of a startup that I have been tracking for 9 months now, (specifically sisudata). More than 4 years ago i also had my eyes on thoughtspot when it first launched but didn't join it because I was in the middle of my PhD so there is some FOMo now. Yoe: 4 TC : 260k PA last two years, 300k PA expected in next two years (Factoring in the rsu capital gain till now) I am seeking advice from people about how do you weight the opportunity cost of not joining a startup against the expected payout of staying within Amz ? This is really a thought exercise because I haven't applied to this company yet( they may not hire me etc.) But still itll be great to hear anecdotes from more experienced people. #sisu #amazon #eb1 #sisudata

best course to maximize TC in the long term is FAANG. do not go to startup for the money. you need to better define โ€œopportunity costโ€. do you mean TC?

Sisu data last I heard was struggling a bit to get traction. They have an amazing team, and might do wonders, but running a startup and making it profitable requires a lot of things to go well and I think they are still at it. Given you have a your kid and have only been at a big company for 4 years, for now I r I'd recommend staying put for atleast another year, keep following Sisudata ( maybe thoughtspot too :) ). And join on a strong signal.

Any insights on how they are doing now?
