Creating a separate thread to track the any progress on this topic for this week. There has be a tremendous response and a ton of useful information posted in the past couple of weeks. We have been constantly trending up week over week in terms of views & comments. Let us continue doing so going in to week #7 (post freeze date). Summary from past few weeks: 1. Google is NOT under a hiring freeze anymore. A freeze by definition is ZERO new offers being extended and that is not the case. We saw offers being generated in some selected orgs since week of 08/15. 2. The above statement does not mean that hiring is back in full swing, in fact far from it. Critical roles are being prioritized and suitable candidates are being moved forward in the process. Open positions pre to post freeze have almost been slashed by 50%. Impacting most of L3/L4 positions.L3 positions seem feasible only in 2023 (with some exceptions) and L4 seem to dwindle down rapidly. Some L5 positions have been cut as well. Even some L6 positions have been cut in the last few weeks. Google is shifting focus to prioritize more on the revenue generators as opposed to cost centers. Days of pet projects and pure research might be behind us. 3. We did see more critical/prioritized roles (SWE in Android, YouTube, Core Platform, Ads, etc.) come out of freeze and offers were extended in the week of 09/05/22. Even some roles in GCP service side (Infrastructure, Databases, etc.) Things have started to move with GCP as well, but only service/engineering related roles (SWE, EM,PM, TPM, etc.) We can potentially see some progress on Sales roles in GCP next week. Please refer to this article - https://d2u3dcdbebyaiu.cloudfront.net/uploads/atch_img/124/1a9f08b81047b1380bab68a5dd600d9b_res.jpeg 4. Macroeconomic factors: Not directly related, but inflation not being tamed will pose a threat to the economy & a potential recession (at least that is the perception) This will force FED's hand to raise interest rates and funny money days are over. It means companies (including Google) tightening down their belt, bonuses, stock buy backs and most importantly head counts. The upside here is lower stock price = potentially more RSUs (if you can negotiate well). 5. Keep in touch with your RCs every week and remind them of your existence, try to stand out as the positions/candidates ratio has dramatically shifted. We have seen open positions being cut from 4900 or so to 2200-2300 until now. The difference could be you vs. ten other candidates that is put forth for a TM. 6. Most RCs know a lot less than the collective wisdom we gather from threads like this, but being in touch with RC is beneficial especially if you have not had a TM or back in the line cuz the role that you were previously matched is gone. 7. Last but not the least, as frustrating as the current situation is... no point in flaring out on RCs, leadership at Google, etc. I rather have them think this through than HIRE in a rush only to FIRE after. Plus, nobody is stopping you from seeking other opportunities. It would be great to know if anyone (regardless of level, role, etc.) are receiving offers after the freeze kicked in and please post any useful updates provided by your recruiters. Just to standardize the format of information sharing, I urge everyone to follow this format: My Situation: Role/Level: Principal Architect (L7) https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/89731263679603398-principal-architect-google-cloud/ Team & Location: GCP (Bay area) Last stage cleared: HC, TM done. Stuck in last stages of compensation negotiation when freeze started. Next step: Hope the GCP sales roles freeze lifts and position exists to continue to offer letter stage. Some updates from RC indicating that resolution can happen any day. Hoping to find out next week if the role exists or has been cut. Please refer here for this history of this thread. Heard from one of my friends at GCP, the freeze is going to continue until the end of September. May also get extended. My situation: still waiting for RC to send my profile for TM.
Heard from a friend 😐. Is he a VP? If not he doesn't know when the freeze is over.
What role and level?
“Days of pet projects and pure research might be behind us.” This is how behemoths like IBM fell to disruptors.
Yeah, but think of the fat checks the IBM execs cashed on increased margins before they got lapped!
Not because of pet projects - or creating the 10th failed clone of something that’s already there. Google needs to innovate heavily on only a few things while strengthening there existing successes
We need a thread for L3 google hiring freeze. The freeze is over for L4+ anyways.
Take the initiative, we'll follow you, you are our new leader, we believe in you
set a reminder to make it in March ‘23
People like you reinstate my faith in humanity. L3 applicant Recruiter reached out to me in May first week Rounds completed by mid August- H/H/LH + LH No verdict by hiring committee. Recruiter told to wait till Dec for updates.
similar timeline to you, did you do TM?
Nope, no TM but recruiter said that she already has a team in mind based on my profile. PS: Not a generic backend guy but want to get into it and this switch was going to be it
L5 GCP PM recruiter told me they'll keep my resume circulating for TM after my first TM went a different direction. Said they would keep my score for 12 months, I'm taking this as a better luck next year. Going to stop looking at these posts everyday, just gonna give up and look elsewhere. If anyone has referrals for PM opportunities at big companies let me know. TC: 300k YoE: 7 PM 2 SWE
Will they you to HC without a team?
let's gooo
Started team match but my recruiter seems to have ghosted me. Been a few weeks since I’ve heard from them and not responding to my emails. Wtf is going on there?
Look them up on LinkedIn just to make sure they still work for Google. As another commenter suggested, if they have left Google you'll need to mail: candidate-interview-support@google.com to get a new recruiter.
Same thing happened to me for L4 roles. Said TM will start two weeks ago but hasn't reached back out yet. I assume my recruiter jumped the gun and is waiting on an update.
Waiting for L7 EM match , roles have reduced at L7 … not too many team matches coming
When did you interview. Can I DM
Sure please feel Free to dm … it was in June
I have interviewed for PE -L? in July. No news since then no feedback either (positive or negative). I want to think positive and keep my hope alive. So far, RC did not provide any meaningful feed back or update. (I just got a heads up about freeze and informed things are going to be slow in July). Hoping by next month I should get some news.
What is PE L ?
Production Engineer - Level unknown, I guess
The overall blind UX on mobile and desktop is seriously poor. I don't know why this site/app is built like this.
I imagine that Blind can't keep any developers because as soon as they come onboard they learn how to leetcode and join FAANG.
