This is a short week and not worth creating a separate thread. What changed in the week of 11/07/22? - Updates to sections 2, 4 & my situation Creating a separate thread to track the any progress on this topic for this week. There has be a tremendous response and a ton of useful information posted in the past 3+ months. In the last 4 weeks, the comments have trended lower and hence I created a quick pool within this thread. 86% of the respondents wanted me to continue this weekly thread. Let us continue doing so going in to week #16 (post official freeze date - 08/05/2022). FYI, the summary is updated every week with some nuances. Summary from past few weeks: 1. Google is NOT under a hiring freeze anymore. A freeze by definition is ZERO new offers being extended and that is not the case. We saw offers being generated in some selected orgs since week of 08/15/2022 and more candidates have gotten clarity, either moved forward or back to TM. 2. The above statement does not mean that hiring is back in full swing, in fact far from it. Critical roles are being prioritized and suitable candidates are being moved forward in the process. Surprisingly a lot L3/L4 SWE positions were hired past month. There has been a constant trickle of positive hiring news being posted on this thread. Last 2-3 weeks we have seen several L4/L5 positions offers in other areas as well. Several L5/L6/L7 positions have been cut in the last few weeks. GCP Update: Several cuts even in L6/L7 positions in GCP. With that being said, traditionally Google typically ramps up on hiring in Q4, this year will be different. With all the layoffs going around the tech companies, the job market is in turmoil. Google is shifting focus to prioritize more on the revenue generators as opposed to cost centers. Days of pet projects and pure research might be behind us. REST and VEST might have finally caught up with Google. To be honest, 2023 might be the next stop for any fresh hiring. Not to mention AMZN has is also announced a hiring freeze, Twitter layoffs and Meta announcing 11K layoffs as on 11/9/22. AMZN & MSFT might follow, even the might APPL & GOOG might join them. 3. I cannot emphasize enough of how important it is for you to have a great relationship with your RC. It is up to them to set you up with currently approved open roles. They generally like to keep you role/location/level in finding these matches. Try to stand out as the positions/candidates ratio has dramatically shifted. Most RCs know a lot less than the collective wisdom we gather from threads like this, but being in touch with RC is beneficial especially if you have not had a TM or back in the line cuz the role that you were previously matched is gone. This means you can expect anywhere from a purely TM get to know call with a HM to a semi-interview style approach by them. Be very prepared for these calls. 4. Macroeconomic factors: Not directly related, but inflation not being tamed will pose a threat to the economy & a potential recession (at least that is the perception). This might force FED's hand to raise interest rates and funny money days are over. The CPI number came in 7.7%, first month-to-month decline since the numbers started heating up, markets were happy as inflation is showing signs of cooling off. Big tech stocks reversed intra-week and gained over 10% across the board. A major test coming for the markets this week and the next. Depending on what the markets do (as they are considered a leading indicator, the companies would follow for 2023. It means companies (including Google) tightening down their belt, bonuses, stock buy backs and most importantly head counts. The upside here is lower stock price = potentially more RSUs (if you can negotiate well). Brace yourself for a target of 3000-3300 fall in S&P and imagine what that could do to the corporate sentiment and hiring. We can also make a small case why the low might be in. It matters cuz a big portion of compensation is RSUs. 5. Last but not the least, as frustrating as the current situation is... no point in flaring out on RCs, leadership at Google, etc. I rather have them think this through than HIRE in a rush only to FIRE after. Plus, nobody is stopping you from seeking other opportunities. It would be great to know if anyone (regardless of level, role, etc.) are receiving offers (share numbers if you are comfortable with it) and please post any useful updates provided by your recruiters. Just to standardize the format of information sharing, I urge everyone to follow this format: My Situation: Role/Level: Principal Architect (L7) Team & Location: GCP (Bay area) Last stage cleared: HC, TM done (June-2022). Stuck in last stages of compensation negotiation since July-2022 when freeze started. Got an update on 09/23/22 that the team & HM that I was aligned with could not keep their HC. Next step: All the Principal Architect positions have been deprioritized I'm done for 2022, if not longer. Will keep the thread alive as long as there is interest, but personally there will NOT be any progress for me. I'm passively exploring other opportunities. A lot of the L3 hires that I’ve seen I’ve been internship conversions. Does anyone know if there’s been L3 hires that weren’t internship conversions?
Seriously? Are they even hiring L3???
L3. 2YOE non intern. Verbal offer Friday and told to expect written today/early this week
With Amazons impending layoffs, it feels like Google has the potential to be next. I would think the jobs they’re hiring for right now might be safe for a little while since they’ve been prioritized through a hiring freeze/slowdown, but it still feels a little risky to change jobs right now.
Probably higher expectation for new hires to perform, but since it was so hard to get these new HC approved I doubt they'd be first in line for layoffs. There's a lot of "fat" elsewhere they'd be more likely to trim first (or entire products).
I’ve been seeing both backfills and new headcounts for core teams so we’re not in a strict hiring freeze anymore
What do you include under core teams?
Signed L4 offer (non-tech) last week. TC 240. Interviewed before the freeze and role was brought back recently.
Nice, I just signed an L4 TPM role last week too. TC: 240 too actually. During my interview process there was no mention of a hiring freeze by the recruiter
How long did it take for HC? I am team matched, level confirmed, and my referrer at google shows my status as “Offer Pending”. The RC has said to me be prepared to talk numbers, yet I’m going on week 3 of waiting. Any insight?
I just signed an offer about a week ago for L5 SWE.
when was ur onsite? how many TM calls? TC?
My onsite was actually months ago, and I went to Meta instead of Google. The offer was re-extended recently, and I decided to accept. I did one TM and it was a good fit. TC is $400k, and I'm not in the Bay area.
In TM limbo for a month. Asked the recruiter if there is an answer from HM but not an accept or reject yet. HMs taking a lot of time for their positions. Also does anyone if the rumor is true about not being an HC meeting this year anymore.
It has always been slightly longer than 1y. You can't wait for 2y, but 15 months can be fine. But again, in this economy I don't have any hope. Someone stuck for few months will always be less preferred since G continues with their usual interviewing. Myself, I'm stuck since June as L4 SWE. Many people I know are stuck since June/July. Some L3 are even stuck from April/May with good interview results, but there was no openings.
I am stuck in July as L4 SWE since July. Honestly I am tired.
I've been once again missed in team matching call by an internal transfer. As usual, one HM has more than 5 candidates, often even 10 to pick from. Stuck in here since June, know many folks stuck since June and July. I honestly don't think most of us will match by mid next year. I lost all hope. Google still continues interviewing and literally gives me middle finger, because who gives a fuck about me and half a year spent preparing for G interview. It all feels inhumane, and my recruiter doesn't seem to care either, she even stopped replying recently.
Stuck since June end
Sorry about that. Be nice to your recruiter and you might get a few more TM. You're right that there is competition for these teams.
Is anyone worried about google doing layoffs and LIFO? All the other tech giants are doing cuts (Meta, Amazon) and you could argue that Google’s HC growth was the largest out of all of them
My personal opinion is that if it's a role that they've opened up now after all of this freeze and reprioritzation, then it's pretty important to Google's immediate strategy and very unlikely to be part of what's cut.
there is a chart about growth in another post so no need to argue it, G did not grow as fast as the others.
